Believed to have been developed by a legendary Buddhist Monk, Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan was originally prescribed for mental fatigue and anxiety following excessive meditation and study. The formula is rich in Yin tonics, which collectively nourish, moisten, cool and calm an exhausted body and mind. Other indications of Yin deficiency should be present, such as a dry mouth or throat, mouth ulcers, night sweats, dry stool, poor memory or palpitations.

A systemic review into the safety and efficacy of this formula revealed promising results in the treatment of insomnia, and it has also been shown to reduce anxiety levels, As a large formula with many ingredients, mechanism of action remains unclear. One study demonstrates a regulating influence on intestinal flora; however, this is likely just one aspect of a broader systemic effect.

Since the heavy tonics which make up the bulk of the formula can be hard to digest, Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan is contraindicated in patients who are chronically fatigued, have a poor digestive system or other symptoms of Yang deficiency. Clear Yin deficiency syndrome should be ascertained first.

Hyperthyroidism, and various manifestations of heart disease may also respond well to this formula.
