Kidney Qi and Yang are the root source of Yang (warmth and functional energy) for the entire body and are responsible for the distribution and metabolism of water throughout the body. Deficiency can manifest as either urinary retention or excessive flow, unquenchable thirst, and weak or cold sensation in the lower body. Due to the Kidney’s relationship with other organs such as the Lung and Liver, shortness of breath and tinnitus can also result, as well as weak bones.

Shen Qi Wan has been shown to improve urinary function and quality of life in patients with benign prostate hypertrophy, potentially through favourably regulating hormone levels. It may assist with adrenal insufficiency through its influence on pituitary adrenocorticotropic hormone and be useful in conjunction with or during withdrawal from corticosteroid medication.
Shen Qi Wan was also found to reduce the level of HbA1c, enhancing glycaemic control in type 2 diabetics.

Hypertonicity of the rectus abdominus in the lower abdomen is a common finding when Shen Qi Wan is indicated.
