Parasitic infestations
Ulcerative colitis
Chronic diarrhoea
Irritable bowel syndrome
Parasitic infestations with Stomach heat and Intestinal cold.
Colitis due to Yang deficiency
Diarrhoea containing pus due to simultaneous pathogenic heat and cold.
Wu Mei Wan addresses the presence of both pathogenic heat and cold by using a combination of bitter, cooling herbs alongside acrid, warming herbs. Sour herbs are also included for their calming and quietening effect on parasites, as well as on general irritability and disorder.
Wu Mei Wan has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and immunomodulatory effects. It may assist in maintaining the epithelial barrier function (gut wall) and improve dysbiosis. There is also preliminary evidence to suggest that Wu Mei Wan inhibits the invasion and metastasis of gastric cancer cells.
This formula is indicated for a complex disease pattern, with a multitude of possible signs and symptoms. It should be considered when there are signs of cold such as cold extremities, diarrhoea or abdominal pain that responds to warmth, along with simultaneous signs of heat such as irritability, dark urine, thirst, hunger or vomiting after eating.
In the treatment of parasitic infestations, Wu Mei Wan calms and contains the parasitic activity to reduce unpleasant symptoms. In many cases it will need to be followed by a purgative formula, to expel the parasites and complete the treatment.
