About the webinar

Xiāoyáo Sǎn is one of the most widely recognised formulas in Chinese medicine, but understanding its clinical application requires more than memorising its familiar modern indications.

Drawing on classical sources, later medical commentaries and clinical case studies, Michael Brown will explore the reasoning behind the formula’s composition, traditional patterns and evolving applications.

The session will examine how the individual herbs work together, how Xiāoyáo Sǎn compares with its major modifications and related formulas, and how historical perspectives can support more considered clinical decision-making today.

What you will learn

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Describe the composition, traditional indications and key therapeutic principles of Xiāoyáo Sǎn.
  • Explain the roles of its individual herbs and how they contribute to the formula’s overall actions.
  • Compare Xiāoyáo Sǎn with its major modifications and related formulas.
  • Examine how interpretations and applications of the formula have developed over time.
  • Apply insights from historical sources and clinical case studies to formula selection and modification.

Who should attend?

This webinar is suitable for Chinese medicine practitioners and students interested in herbal formulas, classical literature and practical clinical reasoning.

The session will begin with the core principles of Xiāoyáo Sǎn before progressing into more detailed historical and clinical analysis.
