Bie Jia Jian Wan is traditionally indicated for malaria-like or Shaoyang symptoms, such as alternating chills and fever and diarrhoea or vomiting which do not resolve with treatment, and progress to the presence of hard masses or tumours, with possible emaciation, pain and jaundice. It is a warming and salty, stasis-melting formula.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the anti-cancer effects of Bie Jia Jian Wan, especially in regard to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
